Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks
Morten Krøgholt sent me this:Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks is a Danish jidpop/klezmer band which in 1997 released the first Danish klezmer CD, "Copenhagen klezmer", on the Danish record label Danica Records. The CD is sold in a number of European countries as well as North America and Asia.
Channe Nussbaum is a well known Danish rock, pop and jazz singer for almost 20 years, but this is the first time she is recording jiddisch music. Together with the Spielniks she gives her interpretations of the klezmer genre which include her childhood's evergreens together with her own brand new songs.
Spielniks plays klezmer with a rock and jazz feeling - a style of music they call jidpop. The band is mainly backing the extraordinary voice of Channe.
The press in Denmark received the first Danish klezmer CD with undivided enthusiasm. The six most important newspapers reviews were thrilled and filled with superlatives. All of the papers emphasised Channe Nussbaum's remarkable voice and Peter Jessen's melancholy and melodious clarinet on top of the steady dynamically grooving backing band.

The band has this year been in Germany and is later going to Sweden and England. Around New Year Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks won a major Danish music award, and in the fall the bands second album will be released.
"Jidpop" is short for Jidish pop. It is klezmer music and Jidishe lieder seen through the music of Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks. Since their first recording, "Copenhagen Klezmer", the band has gotten new inspiration from performing at festivals and concerts around Europe. On this cd only four out of fourteen songs are from the traditional klezmer repertoire. The rest of the music is new Danish jidpop written by Channe Nussbaum and Jens Tolsgaard.
Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks' music still has its roots in traditional klezmer, but on the cd "Jidishe Mame" the band has taken another step into the universe of world music. In the new style - jidpop - the lyrics are in Jidish and the musical inspiration is from Danish folk, tango, techno, jazz and rock'n'roll.
Channe Nussbaum & Spielniks use the Danish spellings for most Jidishe words.
